In the SportsHub Group C, North Kildare and Balbriggan met at The Maws where the visitors were 19-run victors. Greg Ford’s 44 was the mainstay of 139/6 for the Balbriggan side, while James Smith led the Kildare bowling with 2-20. Monil Patel smashed 60 off 50 to take North Kildare to 105-2 with four overs remaining but that was as good as it got for the home side. Campbell Webb-Davies 2-12 once again impressing with the ball for Balbriggan.
The opening bowlers I. Sabir and J. Makris started well and put the opposition under pressure. After 10 over Finglas were 33/3. Balbriggan looked to be in full control of the game but sloppy fielding and a loss of concentration cost us dearly as the opposition reached 132 after the 20 overs only losing 8 wickets.
There were some standout performances with the ball in hand namely
I.Sabir 2/9 off 4
C.Uba 2/24 off 3
R.Kear 2/35 off 4
Balbriggan went into bat knowing that our target was 133 and we felt confident chasing that total. Unfortunately, we lost 2 early wickets in the first over which put a slight dent in our run chase. C. Rooney and B.Dunphy steadied the innings, until Finglas broke the partnership with a run out. The batsmen to follow were under pressure to score at a quick rate whilst keeping their wicket. This proved too much for the middle and lower order batmen to handle on the day and were restricted to 129/9 after our 20 overs.
Top run scorers for the day were
R.Kear -22 not out
B.Dunphy – 15
C.Uba – 15
I.Sabir – 15
We learnt a lot from our first game of the season and we can only get better from this result. The team is coming together nicely with a good blend of youth and experienced players and will be targeting a win in our next fixture against our local rivals North County.
Finglas, winning the toss, opened the batting. Stephen Crawley broke through early with a sublime catch from John Keeler to have the hosts at 1/5 off the third over. The Finglas batsman started to build a partnership making 55 before a catch from Jose O’Carroll off John Keelers bowling saw Finglas reach 60 for 2. A short number of runs later, Vik vehrukia entered the attack tumbling wickets to leave his figures at 4/29 off 4 overs.
With wickets falling quickly, Finglas ended their innings 178 all out. Stand out bowling performances from Vik, Fionn and Aadi.
With a large 9 an over to chase, Balbriggan opened up their innings with Chris McMahon and Jazib Javed, with the team, like finglas falling to 1-5. Finglas struck quick again leaving Balbriggan 2-10 off three overs. Druhan Knight and Vik Veruhkia came in to steady the ship adding a 35 run partnership before Knight was run out. After 25 runs, and the run rate starting to creep up, Vik took the hand brake off and was caught on the boundary. Stephen Crawley had a quickfire cameo with 17 runs, including three fours.
Unfortunately, the season opener went to Finglas, winning by 50 runs. Next up for the 4s is The Hills this Saturday, in the Vineyard.
The opposition won the toss and put themselves into bat first. With Captain John Markey handing the ball to Martin Murphy to open his account!
Chapilizod had a solid start to their innings, moving to 21-1 off 5. After amassing a number of partnerships, the Taverners looked to be in the driving seat. With wickets for Jacko Purdue, Rana Zamir and a quick stumping unsettled the home side. The Brigg were back in the game. Exsteen Maritz came into the attack with a ferocious leggie, putting serious pressure onto their batsmen.
Pick of the Chapelizod batsmen were Mick Connors and Debrs, returning for 23 and 21 respectively. After 20 overs the Chapelizod Taverners were 101 for 9. Star of the bowling was Jacko taking 2 wickets for 11 runs off 2 overs.
With a modest run rate of 5 an over to chase, Martin Murphy and Luke McLeod opened the batting. After a number of singles the partnership eventually broke at 14 with McLeod playing onto the stumps. Antonio, the eventual opposition man of the match, fired again, removing Murphy for 9 shortly after. With the fall of wickets continuing, it looked like a repeat win for the opposition. Rana Samir and Andy McLean steadied the ship.
Followed by quick fire runs by Sharukh Nawaz & Jazib Javed had the Balbriggan Tavs well on their way to the finish line. With Man of the Match Andy McLean and Shahrukh both returning for 25 and 19, It was left to Exsteen and Jazib to close out the innings. Having saved their best til last, Chapelizod piled on the pressure in the field, leaving the Brig needing 17 off 12. With a couple of quick singles and cracking fours by Ex, the Taverners brought home their first win!
The Brig welcome the Army and ESB to Jack Harper park on Wednesday 23rd and Friday 25th of June. All new players are welcome to join the Taverners Social Team, speak to Captain John Markey and come on down any Friday Evening after 6pm!
